The purpose of these MAST courses is to enhance public safety and promote responsible alcohol use by providing servers with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Prevent alcohol service to minors
  • Prevent alcohol service to visibly intoxicated persons
  • Prevent violations of alcohol laws and rules

Per regulations, the Class 12 course is three hours and the Class 13 course is one hour. Each course consists of six modules, including:

  • Mandatory Alcohol Server Training Program
  • Alcohol and its Effects on the Body
  • Minors and Checking ID
  • Apparently Intoxicated Persons
  • Liability
  • Rules Related to Alcohol Laws and MAST

Who Needs to Take a MAST Course?

The MAST program is designed for Washington alcohol servers and managers who work at businesses licensed for on-premises alcohol consumption. All servers and managers are required to hold a valid Class 12 or Class 13 permit, which are issued after completing the course.

The permit you need will depend on your age, and your permit type determines the type of alcohol services you can legally perform. You must be at least 21 years old to earn a Class 12 permit and perform all legal functions for on-premises servers.

Employees ages 18 to 20 years old need a Class 13 permit, which comes with certain restrictions. Class 13 permit holders cannot mix drinks or draw beer or wine from the tap. But they are permitted to open alcohol containers, pour drinks and carry alcohol to customers' tables.

Testing Requirements

At the end of each module in the course, students will take a 10-question quiz. You have an unlimited number of attempts to earn a passing score of 100%.

At the end of the course there is a 40-question final exam with no time limit. You must complete the entire course before you can proceed to the final exam. As you are going through the course, feel free to go back and review any of the information in the modules you have already covered. However, please be advised that the final exam is closed book, meaning once you begin the exam you may no longer go back and review. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam with a score of 80% or higher.

When Will I Receive My MAST Permit?

You can download a certificate of completion immediately after you pass the course. Provide this certificate to your employer to confirm that you completed your training.

Your official Class 12 or Class 13 permit will be delivered by mail. Permits will be created and sent within seven to 10 business days of course completion. Expedited shipping options are available for an additional fee.
